ARGENTIERA (SS) – THE ABANDONED MINE
THE GHOST OF MINERS

Sardinia is not only a destination for sea lovers, it is an island hiding secrets, stories, a country rich in places that want to be remembered as they were then. Argentiera in the province of Sassari, between Alghero and Stintino is one of them; it is a place that talks to you, that drags you with itself so to make you understand what happened there in the past.

Even if it is a seaside resort, it doesn’t teem with tourists and the calm with which you can enjoy all what the mine provides, makes the walk even more impressive.

Mean while I was looking inside the ruined houses, I realized that despite the state of desolation and abandonment, there was something very strong that kept those walls alive, in every stone there was an energy that gave off something. I could feel it on my skin, it entered into my soul and at last I decided to be guided by this strange but positive sensation. Walking aimlessly I visited all the tunnels dug by miners, houses and old buildings.

I went on and I saw the “Bar del Minatore” (Miner’s bar), I entered hoping to find someone who could tell me something more, I wanted to know the history of this extraordinary place.

The owner of the bar, Gian Paolo Avanzi, has kindly granted an interview giving me the opportunity to enrich the information on my research.

He told me that the mine was officially opened in 1840. The area was very rich in gold and silver and the small town lived and prospered thanks to the nuggets that were extracted by the miners. They dug over 700 meters in depth, but the proximity to the sea, with the erosion of the rocks, caused devastating collapses during which many men died. It is said that the souls of the miners who were buried alive, even now range among these caves.

In 1963 after numerous sightings and reports from people living there the mine was closed and automatically abandoned.

I have walked along the ruins of the mine, I have breathed that dark and meanwhile magnetic atmosphere.... the energy that lives there has the power to make it seem that the time has stopped. There are a lot of legends about this place but to deeply understand this evocative and fascinating energy you have to see it with your own eyes.
